The Irrigation Department has warned of a possible minor flood situation in several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River following heavy rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas.
According to the department, heavy rainfall received over the past few hours has increased the risk of minor flooding in areas surrounding the Mahaweli River within the Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha, Doluwa, Udunuwara, Yatinuwara, Gangawata Korale, Harispattuwa and Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain highly alert and take necessary precautions in the event of rising water levels or flooding.
Motorists travelling on roads through the affected areas have also been advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant regarding the prevailing conditions.
The Irrigation Department has further called on relevant disaster management authorities to take all necessary measures to respond to the situation.
