Water levels in several major rivers across the country have risen following continued rainfall, with minor flooding reported in some areas, according to the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department.
The latest water-level and rainfall report, issued at 9:00 p.m. today (21), said the Kuda Ganga at Millakanda/Kalawellawa had reached 7.12 metres, resulting in minor flooding.
The Gin Ganga at Baddegama has also risen to 4.11 metres, with minor flooding reported in the area.
Meanwhile, the Kalu Ganga at Ratnapura, Maguru Ganga at Magura, and Nilwala Ganga at Thalgahagoda and Panadugama remain at alert levels. However, authorities said water levels in these locations are gradually receding.
Several parts of the island recorded significant rainfall over the past 12 hours.
The highest rainfall figures were recorded at:
* Seethawaka Ganga, Deraniyagala – 38.4 mm
* Mahaweli Ganga, Peradeniya – 33.8 mm
* Kelani Ganga, Kitulgala – 26.0 mm
* Kelani Ganga, Glencourse – 23.5 mm
* Mahaweli Ganga, Nawalapitiya – 19.0 mm
Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying areas near the affected river basins to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Drivers travelling through these areas have also been advised to exercise caution and remain alert to possible sudden flooding and other weather-related hazards.
