The low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, the Department of Meteorology said.

The system intensified into a “Depression” at 5:30 a.m. Sri Lanka time  today (21), while located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.

The  Department of Meteorology said the depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.

Continuing its west-northwestward movement, the system is also very likely to cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast, according to the department.

The strengthening system is expected to cause deteriorating sea conditions, with winds in areas under the ‘Advisory’ category increasing to 55–65 kmph at times. Seas in these areas are expected to become rough to very rough.

Meanwhile, in areas placed under the Warning category, wind speeds may increase to 70 kmph at times, while heavy thundershowers and very rough seas are also possible, the Met. Department noted.

The Department of Meteorology has also warned naval and fishing communities not to venture into the affected sea areas between 5°N and 22°N latitude and 85°E and 100°E longitude until further notice.

Those already operating in the affected sea areas have been advised to move away from the hazardous zones and remain vigilant.

The Department has urged naval and fishing communities to closely monitor future forecasts and official bulletins as the depression continues to develop.
