SJB MPs wear black in Parliament ahead of vote on 22nd Amendment

Members of Parliament representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) arrived at Parliament dressed in black to protest against the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill.

 

Today (25) marks the final day of the Second Reading debate on the Bills, with a vote scheduled to take place this evening.

 

The parliamentary debate on the Bills commenced yesterday (24), following their presentation for the Second Reading by Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.

 

In protest against the proposed legislation, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya also organized a protest yesterday at the Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla under the theme, “No to 22, which destroys democracy.”

 

Protesters wearing black armbands gathered at the junction, while several politicians, including Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, joined the protest.
