
The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level severe lightning advisory for several parts of the country.
The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 10.30 a.m. today (October 1), will remain in effect until 11.30 p.m.
The warning will be in place for residents of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and North Central provinces and the Mannar District.
The Met. Department said thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several locations in the affected areas.
Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms, while the public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimize the risk of lightning-related damage.
Authorities have advised the general public to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees.
People have also been requested to stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies, during thunderstorms.
According to the advisory, the public has been urged to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to the power supply during thunderstorms, and to refrain from using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
Residents are also advised to remain alert for fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities in the event of an emergency.
