Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena’s wife, a court employee, and a registrar, who were arrested and remanded in connection with a bribery case, have been further remanded until October 20 by order of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the order after considering submissions made by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and defence counsel representing the suspects.
The suspects were arrested by the Bribery Commission and produced before the court on allegations of giving, receiving, and aiding and abetting the payment of a Rs. 50,000 bribe to secure a lenient sentence in connection with another bribery case currently pending before Colombo High Court No. 11 against former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena, who is currently serving a prison sentence.
