The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s (JVP) Vavuniya office near the Thandikulam railway station was declared open this morning by party General Secretary Tilvin Silva. Former Parliamentarian Ramalingam Chandrasekeran too was present at the occasion.

Tilvin Silva, while thanking those who had attended the ceremony said that they were able to open the office at Vavuniya despite the government attempts to obstruct it. He said this day was of significance as this was a step towards a political journey of unity with the people who had undergone severe hardships for nearly 30 years.

“We know that the people of Vavuniya have been living amidst hardships. It is unfortunate that they lived such a life and are still continuing to do so. They are still living with the memories of those close to them whom they have lost. Hence, we believe that we are duty bound to create a peaceful society for their future generation,” said Tilvin Silva.

He added that those who had ruled this country for the last 62 years and those who are in power today have been unable to bring relief to the people of Vavuniya.

The government is only interested in concentrating more power by changing the constitution and not about the suffering masses. It is not bothered of national unity. It is afraid of the people flocking around the JVP and is attempting to block the march, not only in Vavuniya but also in the north and the East by using the police, Mr. Silva claimed.

The JVP is not a party of any individual. It is a party of the common masses whether Sinhalese, Tamils or Muslims. Whatever the obstructions, the JVP will continue to maintain the office opened this morning, vowed Tilvin Silva.

Police had intimidated JVP supporters who were preparing the area for the opening ceremony. Another group had arrived on Saturday night, claiming to be from the Military intelligence and had questioned those present in the vicinity. Following this, the Thandikulam Police OIC had questioned the JVP supporters as to who had granted permission to open a political office in the area. He had also recorded the names, addresses and other particulars of the JVP supporters, claimed the JVP General Secretary.

The Police had also tried to question the persons who had rented out the office area to the JVP, Mr. Silva added. Though several groups had attempted to obstruct it, the JVP had overcome all such obstacles and opened this office, said Tilvin Silva.
