The Colombo-Chilaw main road has been blocked at Periyamulla due to a protest by fishermen, the Ada Derana reporter confirms. Fishermen are protesting the recent fuel hike and the government’s failure to grant a concession.
Meanwhile it has also been reported that roads in Negombo, Porutota, Wellaweediya and Kudapaduwa areas have also been blocked as a result of ongoing protests. Fishermen in the area have been engaged in protests since yesterday, setting tires on fire and shouting slogans on roads.
Fishermen in Negombo had decided to boycott fishing from today citing the increase in fuel prices that have gravely affected their fishing activities.
It is said that around 50,000 multi-day, single-day and small time fishermen have not put out to sea today.
Also long-distance private buses coming in from North, East and North Central provinces are being turned back at Dambulla. The passengers of the buses are being dropped off at the Dambulla city before turning back, Ada Derana reporter said.
