
Sri Lanka Navy today arrested 109 illegal asylum seekers after intercepting another boat, in the Eastern seas around 25 nautical miles off Kalkudah, attempting to flee to Australia.
The arrested individuals included 08 Sinhalese and 101 Tamils from Chilaw, Valaichchenai, Kalmunai, Talawakele and Kalpitiya areas, Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said.
The arrested suspects and their boat ‘Sewwandi Duwa’ have been escorted to the Tricomalee Harbour while further investigations are ongoing, he said.
Earlier today Chilaw Police arrested 22 persons in Munneswaram who were attempting to travel to Australia illegally.
