Following the in the aftermath of the controversial ‘white flag’ story, an English weekend newspaper has revealed that former Army Commander General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka who denied his connections with the Hicorp arms deal, has in fact served on the Board of the company as a Director following his retirement.

‘The Sunday Leader’ which published the controversial interview with General Fonseka on the eve of his entry into active politics has reported that former STF Commander Nimal Gunathilaka had told the journalist that he too had served as a director on the board of Hicorp and that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had requested a statement from him (Gunathilaka) on Saturday.

“The former STF Commander said he served on the board of Hicorp for a period of six months before resigning. During this time Gunathilake said Mrs. Ashoka Tilakaratne together with her son Danuna Tilakaratne were also directors.

“General Sarath Fonseka, Gunathilaka said joined the Board of Hicorp following his retirement as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

“Gunathilake added that Hicorp had been involved in the purchasing and supplying of arms and ammunition to the Sri Lanka Army.

“Meanwhile, with Fonseka’s son-in-law, Danuna on the run, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has requested for assistance from Interpol to help apprehend him.

Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakodi told The Sunday Leader yesterday that the CID had sought help from Interpol to investigate into Tilakaratne’s whereabouts in the event he had fled Sri Lanka and to also to carry out investigations into his financial dealings,” reports the Sunday leader of February 21, 2010.
