Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has revealed that as per the statistics gathered this year, underworld activities were prevalent in 43 police domains within two provinces.
Speaking on the stringent efforts currently underway to curb all underworld and drug-related activities in the country, Tennakoon emphasised that despite claims that there is a rapid increase in the operation of underworld activities and drug rackets throughout Sri Lanka, this is not the case.
“If we want to eliminate all underworld activities, we only have to improve two provinces; the Western and Southern Provinces”, he stated in this regard.
“We will eradicate all underworld activities in a few months. There are 1,091 people involved with the underworld. They kill people in the morning and fly to Dubai in the evening. There are 23 murderers living in the same housing complex in Dubai. Measures are underway to bring them back to Sri Lanka. After January, these 1,091 underworld gangsters will no longer be able to leave the airport using forged passports”, the Acting IGP charged.
Meanwhile, Minister of Public Security also stated that a special island-wide operation will commence on Sunday (17 Dec.) to combat organized crimes and drug peddling.
