A special three-day dengue prevention programme will be implemented from today (24) until June 26 across six high-risk provinces where dengue has reached an elevated risk level, the National Dengue Control Unit stated.

The number of dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka has exceeded 48,000, according to Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara.

He stated that a total of 48,287 dengue cases have been recorded across the country from January to date.

Dr. Kannangara further noted that approximately 750 new dengue cases were reported on June 23 alone.

The Western Province has been identified as the most high-risk province, accounting for 52.12% of all reported dengue cases nationwide.

A total of 14,446 dengue cases have been reported within the month of June alone, he said.

Meanwhile, the Southern Province accounts for 16.04% of reported cases, while the Sabaragamuwa Province has recorded 9.15% of the total cases.

Dr. Kannangara also warned that alongside the ongoing dengue outbreak, cases of Chikungunya are also on the rise in the country.
