6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan; tremors felt across north India

An earthquake 6.2 magnitude struck Afghanistan on Saturday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Tremors were also felt across several parts of north India. The quake occurred at 7.04pm, it struck at a depth of 215 km beneath the surface, the NCS said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is highly prone to earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, one of the world's most seismically active areas, according to the Red Cross. The country's vulnerability stems from its location at the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

It is also intersected by major fault lines, including one that runs through parts of the country such as the Herat region.

This comes amid heightened seismic activity in the region, with at least five moderate earthquakes striking Pakistan's south-western province of Balochistan since Friday.

The tremors, ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 5.3, have injured at least five people and damaged several mud houses in remote areas, including Barkhan, Musakhail, Kohlu, Kingri and Rakhni.
