Two Sri Lankan nationals, who illegally reached Dhanushkodi by boat on Friday, were detained by the Indian Marine Police, according to Indian media reports.

Official sources stated that Marine Police personnel on patrol for the Sagar Kavach coastal defence exercise spotted the two men acting suspiciously on the shore.

Upon questioning, the individuals were identified as G. Vigneswaran, 31, and M. Lusinath, 30, both hailing from Wattala, Sri Lanka.

They were taken to the Marine Police Station for further interrogation, which revealed that Sri Lankan authorities suspected the duo of involvement in a shooting incident in Wattala on Thursday, The Hindu reported.

Additionally, both face three pending drug-related cases in Sri Lanka.

Following information from Sri Lankan authorities seeking their custody, police sources said that the suspects have been moved to the special camp inside the Tiruchi Central Prison premises.

They are expected to be repatriated to Sri Lanka within a week.
