The prevailing El Niño conditions could have an impact on electricity generation in Sri Lanka in late March and during the first two weeks of April next year, Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilaka said.
The Energy Minister said the government is preparing measures to reduce the potential impact on the power supply by increasing the use of battery energy storage systems.
According to Minister Karunathilaka, the first phase of the battery storage programme is expected to add 160 megawatts (MW) to the national electricity system before December this year.
He said the additional storage capacity would help strengthen the electricity system and provide an alternative during periods when power generation could be affected by the prevailing El Niño conditions.
Authorities are also closely monitoring the situation as Sri Lanka prepares for the possible impact of changing weather conditions on electricity generation next year.
