The Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) has announced that university lecturers will stage a one-day strike today (09) over the ongoing crisis within the state university system.
FUTA Secretary Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilangasinghe said the union has been engaged in trade union action throughout the past week, highlighting concerns including the shortage of lecturers and the lack of suitably qualified academic staff.
He said the situation has become serious, with students who sat for the 2025 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination potentially unable to gain admission to state universities.
FUTA also stressed that while the President has announced plans to establish 50 new state universities, priority should be given to maintaining and improving the quality of the existing 17 state universities.
The federation said it is awaiting further discussions with the authorities and emphasized that a permanent solution is needed to address the crisis facing the state university system.
