Update- The Third Reading of the Judicature (Amendment) Bill has been passed in Parliament, by a majority of 96 votes.
A total of 158 parliamentarians voted in favour of the bill while 62 members voted against.
Earlier, the Second-Reading of the Judicature (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Parliament, by a special majority.
A total of 158 members voted in favour of the amendment bill while 63 voted against it.
The Judicature (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend provisions relating to judges serving in the lower courts.
The Bill includes an increase in the retirement age of judges serving in the High Courts, District Courts and Magistrates’ Courts to 62.
The Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill were presented to Parliament on August 18 by Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara.
Earlier, the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill was also passed with amendments with a special majority in the Parliament.
