Sri Lanka records decline in tourism revenue during first 5 months compared to last year

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has stated that tourism earnings recorded in the country from January to May this year have declined compared to the corresponding period last year.

 

According to a report released by the Central Bank, tourism revenue generated from January to May this year amounted to USD 1,360 million.

 

However, during the same period in 2025, tourism earnings were recorded at USD 1,543.1 million. Compared with the previous year's figure, tourism revenue for the first five months of this year represents a decline of 11.9 percent.

 

Meanwhile, tourism earnings for May this year stood at USD 155.7 million, compared to USD 164.1 million recorded in May 2025.

 

The Central Bank further stated in its report that foreign remittance inflows received by the country from January to May this year amounted to USD 3,909.7 million.

 

During the corresponding period last year, foreign remittances were recorded at USD 3,102.2 million, indicating a significant increase in remittance inflows during the first five months of this year.
