A suspect who is alleged to have broken into several houses in areas including Rambukpitiya, Kendopitiya, and Weligampola and had stolen gold jewellery and cash has been arrested by Nawalapitiya Police.

The suspect, a 34-year-old father of one residing in the Kendopitiya area of Nawalapitiya, identified as Mahesh Madusanka also known as “Tikka,” has been taken into custody.

Police stated that the suspect is a severe addict of crystal methamphetamine (“Ice”) and had previous warrants issued against him in connection with drug dealing and robbery offences.

Investigations have revealed that after being released on bail on 22 January 2026, the suspect allegedly broke into eight houses and stole gold jewellery worth nearly Rs. 3.5 million, around Rs. 40,000 in cash, and four mobile phones.

The suspect was arrested during a special operation conducted by officers of the Nawalapitiya Police Criminal Investigation Division, and the stolen gold jewellery was recovered buried near his residence.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly stated that the stolen money was used to purchase drugs and that after using the narcotic substance ‘Ice,’ he experienced impulses to commit housebreakings to obtain money.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect targeted homes of individuals such as teachers, bank officers, and police officers who are usually away from their residences due to work commitments.

Nawalapitiya Police are continuing further investigations into the incident.
