The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized 801 reusable plastic bottles during a special raid targeting shops selling such bottles in the Pettah area.
The CAA said special raids and investigations are currently being conducted in connection with the seized bottles. Upon completion of the investigations, legal action will be taken against the owners of relevant businesses before the magistrate’s courts, the CAA stated.
The SLS 1616 standard applies to reusable plastic bottles used to carry drinking liquids.
According to the CAA, locally manufactured bottles of this type must bear the SLS product certification mark issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). Imported bottles must also undergo inspection under the SLSI import inspection procedure and receive approval before being released for sale.
Consumers have also been advised to ensure that reusable plastic bottles meet the relevant standards and legal requirements before purchasing them.
