The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning, warning residents in several parts of the country to take immediate precautions.
The advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre will remain in effect for residents of the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaitivu, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts.
According to the Met. Department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely in several areas. Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms.
Authorities have also urged the general public to remain indoors during thunderstorms and to avoid taking shelter under trees. People are also advised to stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies.
The public has further been advised to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to the mains during thunderstorms, and to refrain from using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
Residents are also urged to exercise caution around fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities if emergency assistance is required.
