Tamil Nadu fishermen associations have called for an indefinite strike at Rameswaram seeking the Indian government’s intervention to secure the early release of 23 fishermen arrested Sri Lankan Navy.
Fishing boats will be not be taken out to sea starting Monday, Tamil Nadu Coastal Mechanised Boat Fishermen Association general secretary N J Bose was quoted as saying by Express News Service.
Naval personnel on Sunday arrested 23 Indian fishermen and seized five boats which had strayed into Sri Lankan waters off Mannar.
The fishermen were later handed over to the Thalaimannar police and would be produced before a court on Monday.
Indian media however claims that they were part of a group of around 704 local fishermen who ventured into the sea on Saturday and that they were fishing near Katchatheevu, when they were ‘surrounded by the Lankan Navy’.
