Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath held discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York.

The discussions focused on Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery and reform programme, as well as the country’s reconciliation efforts.

The two sides also exchanged views on reforms to the international financial architecture aimed at providing greater support to developing countries, according to Minister Vijitha Herath.

Sri Lanka’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations was also discussed during the meeting. The Foreign Minister described the exchange with the UN Secretary-General as cordial and constructive.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath participated in a high-level plenary meeting held to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Addressing the meeting, the Foreign Minister reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and called for concrete, time-bound measures towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

The Minister also stressed the importance of redirecting resources towards development, healthcare, education and climate action, underscoring the need to prioritise sustainable development and human well-being.

Separately, Minister Vijitha Herath met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare on the sidelines of UNGA81.

During the meeting, the Minister expressed appreciation for the operational support provided to Sri Lankan peacekeepers serving under UN Peacekeeping and UN Security Council-mandated missions.

The Foreign Minister also reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s longstanding commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations.
